Study on the Special Railway Establishment for Strategic Technology & Holistic Advancement (SRESTHA) in Indian Railways

The Challenge

Our Honourable PM’s 2022 Vision Program of Reform, Perform and Transform of Indian Railway, highlights setting up of a R&D organisation for Indian railways (IR). Accordingly, IR through DFCCIL decided to study on Special Railway Establishment for Strategic Technology & Holistic Advancement (SRESTHA) in order to make IR a global leader in Railway

technology by developing capabilities through breakthrough innovations.

Project Approach

  • DFCCIL appointed IRT, Monash University together with its partners Balaji Railroad Systems Private Ltd (BARSYL), PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) and IIT, Bombay to prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) as a Blueprint on SRESTHA for providing roadmap to establish a successful, globally recognised, contemporary research & development organisation for IR. BARSYL’s role was to provide technical inputs to Consortium in all rail related aspects pertaining to IR
  • SRESTHA will be locally engaged and globally recognized for its capabilities in the areas of High Speed, Heavy Haul, Throughput, Safety, ICT & Automation and Energy & Environment. A comprehensive study was accomplished by the Consultant team based on findings from extensive stakeholder engagement, wide research and analysis and the benchmark reviews of global & local research organisations.
