Mr. Ravindra retired as Chairman Railway Board and was a Member Telecom Regulatory Authority of India after retirement. He has joined the Board of Balaji Railroad Systems Limited as an Independent Director with effect from 10th August 2012. Born in 1939, he is a B.E (Civil Engineering) from Banaras Hindu University.
He joined Indian Railways Service of Engineers in 1961 and has had a distinguished career spanning 36 years during which he has served as Member Engineering - Railway Board & ex-officio Secretary GoI, General Manager - Western Railway, Chief Administrative Officer (Construction) - Southern Railway, Director - Indian Railways Institute of Civil Engineering, Pune and Consultant to the Government of Iraq.
Presently he is a Member of the National Transport Development Planning Committee under the aegis of Planning Commission and Integrity Pact Monitor appointed by CVC for RITES Ltd. and Madras Port Trust.
Electrical Engineer with Post Graduate qualification in Business Management has about 20 years of professional experience covering marketing, business planning and project management of rail infrastructure projects in India, UK, Singapore, Malaysia and Bangladesh. Cross functional experience in conducting & coordinating project feasibility studies, commercial documentation, tender evaluation contract management, costing, and budgeting for railway projects covering urban transport, freight rail systems and passenger rail systems.
His experience covers Project Management of complex studies, techno – financial evaluation, design review of new railway projects in India, UK, Syria, Germany, France, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Malaysia and Singapore. He also has hands on experience of International railway technology.
Some of the major projects he has managed include: Design and supply of special purpose rolling stock to Alstom, Singapore, Preliminary Feasibility study for a high speed dedicated freight line for iron ore in India, Design of Train Protection & Warning Systems for British Rail, UK, Preliminary design for seven yards for new line Malaysia. Feasibility study for Airport rail link to Hyderabad international Airport. Has been instrumental in guiding the company’s activities towards diversifying into niche Rail and Metro Space.
He brings with him decades of experience as an entrepreneur, CEO of large organizations, international expertise in strategic positioning, mergers and acquisitions. He is a member of the board on a number of domestic and international organizations. Currently he is on the board of Ranbaxy-Signature, LLC, NY, USA, Member of executive board of Life Enhancing Technologies, LLC, TX, USA, Managing Director of American Generics India Ltd., India, Chairman, Lipicard Technologies Ltd., India and takes care of Corporate Strategy and Long-Term strategic issues as Director - Strategy, BARSYL. He is also a Visiting Professor of Osmania University - MBA Technology Management program. He is M. Tech in Industrial Engineering & Operations Research from IIT, Kharagpur with BE in Mechanical Engineering (Honours course) from AC College of Engineering & Technology, Tamilnadu.
Mr. Rao is a Civil Engineer with over 37 years of distinguished experience covering Government, Public and Private Sectors. His experience covers India, Nepal, Bangladesh, UAE, Iraq, Cyprus and Singapore. Some of the key assignments handled by him include: Railway Specialist to Govt. of Iraq through RITES (Ministry of Railways) in Baghdad for four years to provide technical consultancy for construction of 600 km long high-speed Railway Line.
As Chief Engineer (Construction) in Indian Railways, executed tough construction Projects in Assam and neighbouring north-eastern Hill states As Group General Manager IRCON and later as Director, handled ADB funded projects in India and Bangladesh. As CEO of Tata Projects Ltd, managed all operations all over India as well as in Nepal, Persian Gulf countries, Cyprus, and Singapore. As a member of Territorial Army (Railways) restored the Railway system after 1971 war in erstwhile East Pakistan Awarded Fellowship under United Nations Development Programme for study tour of Railroad Systems in USA in Sep 1977.
Mr. SD Limaye, graduate from College of Engineering Pune in Civil Engineering in year 1971 and Post-graduation in Structural Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology Bombay in 1973. He joined the Indian Railways Service of Engineers (IRSE) in December 1973. He handled various position in the Western Railway from 1975 to 1983. He also worked as Professor (Bridges) in Indian Railways Institute of Civil Engineering, Pune (IRICEN) during 1983-89. He received training in USA & UK in Modern Bridge Technology one year under a UNDP fellowship. He worked with Konkan Railway Corporation right from the beginning i.e. 1990 upto the commissioning of Konkan Railway in 1998. In the capacity of Chief Engineer (Design & Co-ordination) he was closely associated with planning design & implementation of Konkan Railway Project. He took voluntary retirement from Indian Railways in 2001. Thereafter joined as Chief Operating Officer of Railway Division of Sir Owen Williams Innovestment Ltd., in Belapur, Navi Mumbai, India.
He retired from there in September 2006 and presently practicing as Expert Consultant on Bridge Design & Construction and Railway Track Design & Construction. He also worked as a Project Director as a part of the Project Management Consultancy on the prestigious (i) 2nd Mahanadi Bridge Project (2 km long bridge on well foundations and 63 m span steel through girders) and (ii) construction of a new Railway Line between Keonjhar & Tomka (100 km) near Bhubaneswar in difficult terrain near conditions for the Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd. He also designed ballastless track for Tunnels on Jammu Udhampur Project of Northern Railway which has been successfully implemented. A number of tunnels were designed under his direction on NF Rly. He works on various railway & tunnel projects.
A Mechanical Engineer from Karnataka University, he started his career with HMT Ltd., a Public Sector Undertaking, as Management Trainee and rose to the position of General Manager in a career spanning 36 years. As a Professional Manager,he has undergone Programmes in Leadership Skill Development as well as Programmes for Senior Management Professionals at IIM, Ahmedabad in 2007. He brings valuable Industry-related functional skills in areas such as Sales and Marketing, Strategy Planning, Finance and Budgeting and Profit Centre Operations. Joined Balaji Railroad Systems Limited, as Head Operations, in March 2009 and was subsequently elevated as Chief Operating Officer in 2011-2014. Nominated as Director on the Board of IMRT, during 2013. He has now been appointed as Director, Corporate Affairs at Balaji Railroad Systems Limited.
